[SC] what happens if a civil summons cannot be completed?

As the title states if I’m pursing a civil case (not criminal) against someone, what happens if I cannot find them?

So the attorneys mailed the complaint to the defendant via registered mail. It’s come to my attention that they most likely were renting their residence and have since moved out. The registered mail is extremely slow and has not been delivered or attempted to be delivered, however, in the past the defendant mentioned renting so the residence could quite possibly be empty. If the registered mail summons will not be claimed by the defendant, then what? Also what happens if the defendant has moved out and the new tenants sign for the registered mail? I believe USPS just wants any signature for registered mail.
