Evicted with under 24 hour notice. What are my options?

California. In September, my current roommate (we’ll call him M) moved in with another roommate and they split the rent 50/50. In October, M’s roommate suddenly left the day before rent was due and he said I could live there and be his roommate. I have been living there, getting my mailed delivered to there, and paying half of rent to him since October 3rd, 2024. However, M’s old roommate is the one on the lease still.

Tonight, M sent me a text saying his sister is with an abusive boyfriend and needed to stay with him and that he needed my room vacant by TOMMOROW. He has absolutely not discussed anything about this with me beforehand.

Since I’m not on the lease, am I fucked? I would be homeless on the streets.

Edit: I’m not even sure if he is allowed to sublet by the landlord by the way.

Edit: just found out, he is NOT allowed to sublet by his landlord. What does this change?
