I was about to move in to a month to month situation when this happened. Is there any way to get my deposit back and first months rent since I never got my keys?

For context this is a month to month rental where nothing was on paper... Stupid I know

The roommate appeared to be on drugs when this happened. Wish I had video evidence or something but this happening honestly makes me afraid for my life. Once this happened I deescalated, brought the roommate to a different area, stopped moving my shit in and went back to my old place. The roommate is going to call me tomorrow to discuss more moving in plans. Please help me and let me know if I have any legal grounds to get back my $750 security deposit, if not the whole thing as I never lived there and the "lease" technically starts Dec 1. Any help appreciated!
