Years ago, my father in law had a timeshare in Lake Tahoe. He passed away in 2020 and we have gotten a notice that we owe taxes on his timeshare. Apparently, my wife was added to the property without her knowledge years ago. It took the timeshare company a few years to track us down since I move a bit for work and now they want us to pay the back taxes. This is not something we are interested in keeping nor is it something we knew we were responsible for in the first place. We never even knew he had a timeshare to begin with. What are our options here without breaking the bank? We are in a tight spot, trying to save up for a house, and already will owe a bunch for federal income taxes this year so do not have the spare cash to take care of this as well.
