I have never been so desperate, my mom is trying to get her lease terminated for a commercial property. We opened a restaurant but it did not work out at all, we put so much money into everything around 140k. However the rent is 6,250.. we are 3 1/2 months behind.. making it around 20k behind. We told the landlord today we weren’t going to be able to pay him, we have nowhere to pay him from.. he said he was going to get his attorneys involved, but regardless we have no way to pay him. We told him from the beginning we were trying to make payments and we really were, but my mom had to sell her booths and things which broke our hearts. My dad passed away in Illinois and we had a very successful business 2 years ago, but without my dad and since he hadn’t been here everything is so hard.. I will try to post pictures of our lease, and maybe someone can help me read it. We’re trying to terminate it but the landlord does not want us to unless we can find someone to take over and he said we’re also responsible for the bills still and if we shut them off they’ll be added to the bill. My brother is also on the lease and he has nothing to do with the restaurant but my mom put him on there just in case of anything. I just want to help out, we’ve never been in such a terrible situation and it broke me to see my mom crying when she got threatened with attorneys. I’m proud of her because all she wanted was to give us a job, an opportunity to work and our dreams got destroyed. :/ I have a 4 year old little sister who needs my mom with her.. we never thought to be put in a situation like this. I did read the lease it doesn’t say anything that she has to pay if she tries to end the lease, but I’m not sure on Iowa laws. Anything helps. I’m just trying to find a way to relieve the stress for my mom.
