Hi reddit, I doubt this will be seen to be fair, but I thought I'd at least attempt to get some advice. I live in the state of Texas, my partner turned 18 yesterday. We had a whole plan to move them out, but of course their mother caught on and was home when we tried to get all of their stuff out. We then left after the mother tried to open my truck door and get my partner out of it.
We needed to get their stuff, and their pet hamster. We then called the non emergency line to hopefully get a cop to help us get their stuff. When he showed up, we told him that we had come from school and Ashton (my partner. 18 Y) didn't feel safe being in there alone with their mother.
So for context. She has been abusive Ash's entire life, calmed down a little over the years. This year has gone back to threatening to attack and kill Ash because she found out they were dating me. (17 F) You can probably see where this is going. Homophobic parents aren't fun.
He said that was fine, and he'd escort us to the house. But said due to their mother obviously owning the property, if she said no Ash couldn't get their stuff. If she had said no, he said that would be in the end of it. But instead he informed the mother apparently even though they turned 18, they still can't move out due to still being in high school?? That doesn't seem right, I feel like we were almost lied to. Now we understand we probably would've been able to get them out if we hadn't involved the cop. Ash just wanted their pet.
Ash had even told him that she was abusive and had been threatening Ash. He then said she could Threaten Ashton all she wanted, even harm with no consequences. Which obviously is actually insane. That can't be right, especially due to them being 18.
So I am asking reddit if those laws are a real thing in Texas? Is it not legal for an 18 year old to move out until they graduate? As well as wondering if there is anything we can do to now get them out, some sort of loop hole in all of this.
