For context I live in Fairfax Country VA.
A prankster came and pretended to threaten me with a gun at my house( it looked real but it may have been a prop) . I threatened him behind a closed door with a gun before I realized he was in costume ( I was kind of panicked). He then ran away. To get to my front door, he had to scale a stone wall, and a gate marked with a private property sign.
If I had used force, would I have been able to claim self defense even though it looked like a prank?
I can give more details if needed.
