Recently, I learned about charges that are being brought against a guy who assaulted me very many years ago. I never pursued legal charges for a wide variety of reasons. The court case is not something that I am involved in and it isn’t about me. Another woman recently got assaulted by the same guy, among other things. She doesn’t know me and I don’t know her- I heard about this through a mutual friend. Despite this, I would really love to help strengthen her case in anyway I can. I know there’s something to do with character witnesses in court cases. I was wondering if I could potentially go give a statement at the police department in order to help strengthen her case. My experience is extremely separate from her experience, but I’m just thinking it might help her to have another victim come forward and speak on their experience in order to strengthen the case that this woman has. If I can help her at all, I want to even if I don’t know her. This is a serial predator who belongs in jail. I’m just not sure how to navigate the legal system or what I can do on my end.
Is there anyway that I can go to the police station and give a statement on what this guy did to me in order to help this girl receive justice for what he did to her? Is there a specific way to navigate this? Is it even going to help? Do outside statements about related events or similar events do anything to help victims? I am very unsure, but I know that I am willing to speak about what happened to me as long as it helps some sort of justice get served on behalf of this other girl.
I’m unsure if she’s only pursuing charges related to stalking and harassment, or if she will end up tacking on the assault. Also not sure if that matters. I just want to help her if I can. Thank you in advance.
I’m in the US- if you need a specific state I can provide that in the comments
