Deny Search at US Border?

I’m a US citizen, coming back from Canada into Maine. I have several forms of identification. I got searched coming into to Canada and it rattled me a little and I don’t want to get searched again coming back into the US. Are they entitled to search my car coming over the border or can I deny them consent to search?
