My husband of 26 years passed suddenly in June. Everything we owned was in his name. We didn’t think it through, he was 52 and he had the better credit. I had to open a probate case to gain access to everything. He didn’t have a ton of debt. Maybe 30K. I went into this knowing absolutely nothing about probate. I recently sold our home. I have the profit in an estate bank account. I have no idea what to do next. I know the debt has to be paid. I’m hoping to settle for the least amount I have to pay. I don’t know how or where to publish to his creditors, how to try to settle with the creditors, and close the case. Would it be faster and easier to hire a lawyer? I’m worried if doing this myself, I will end of paying more in the long run. It’s been unbelievably stressful and I want to move past this. What would you do? I’m not educated whatsoever in this department of life.
