I am currently in the process of trying to get on disability insurance that is not through work. I do not qualify right now for the disability insurance through work so am trying to get an individual plan. I keep getting asked why I take a drug called Descovy. It is because I am a gay man and it prevents HIV. It can be used for people who have HIV and I think when I list my current prescriptions the disability insurance companies see that and begin to prod and question why I am taking it.

I'm currently reaching out to a handful of insurance companies and am curious why in the paperwork it says if you have HIV or AIDS you can be denied coverage. How is THAT legal but then insurance companies cannot deny you for taking drugs to prevent HIV?* Plus how can they deny people who have HIV coverage when many people out there take pills to make it so their HIV is detectable? To clarify the below case and to fit what I am saying more... It seems like the insurance companies tip toe around those who are taking prescriptions to prevent HIV and maybe it is because very much close to everyone on HIV pills is a gay or bisexual man (protected class)... But then you can turn around and tell the men who are HIV but undetectable you are not getting coverage ever for the same insurance plan?
