I am 19 years old and from New York State. Last night, someone I met on a hookup site (sniffies.com) messaged me saying that they encountered someone using my picture to catfish them (I had never sent him this picture but it's clearly me and he could see on my Instagram profile picture, where we were talking, that it was me). The person using my picture also sent a sexual picture of a penis, but it was not mine.
The thing aside from the obvious annoyance of my picture being used by someone is that, the person I had met on the hookup app that told me about the catfish is 17. I'll explain this really quick. Basically he had his age as 18 on the website, we exchanged a couple words (no pictures) and we moved to Instagram, still with the understanding that he was 18. On Instagram he told me that he was 17 and I said that even though as long as there weren't any pictures it'd be legal in our state, I still wasn't comfortable with that. And that was that, what I thought was the end of the interaction, until he messaged me a few hours later telling me about the person using my picture.
It is true that I, as a consenting legal adult, have sent and probably will continue to send sexual pictures of myself to other consenting legal adults. But I would never send anything of that nature to a 17 year old. New York State law says that the age of consent for sex is 17, but not for images, which is 18. I would never and will never send anything sexual to a 17 year old.
The kicker of this all is that the person created a burner account for it (had a snap score of 0) and immediately after the recipient caught on to his bluff, he blocked him and presumably deleted the account. He also blocked him on sniffies, so I have no way of knowing who it was or what accounts were used.
What, if anything, can I do about this? Can I be held liable for anything this guy does with my face? If he's messaging minors as me, could I get into trouble even though I didn't do anything?
Thank you in advance.
