Can I recreate a cover for a book that I legally bought with my own images and fonts, then sell it? (Canada)

I have a hobby where I take my old books, I rip the cover off and then I create a brand new hard cover using my own fonts and images.

A friend of a friend noticed and wants me to do her books. She said she’d pay me.

I am not printing the book online, I am using a book that I purchased at indigo. And all I am doing is removing the paper cover, and creating a hardcover.

If you sell that, is it illegal? If it is, what is the process of contacting the authors that I would like to do their books? To get permission.
