A friend, but not a close friend asked me if I would be willing to co-sign her green card application. She is getting married, but her fiance doesn't financially qualify to sponsor her. Most of the requirements for me seem to be fairly simple, except one particular clause which seems to potentially have negative ramifications - filling out a form I-864, Affidavit of Support, a document that the co-sponsor fills out and signs as a promise from the co-sponsor that they will financially support the applicant if needed.
This sounds potentially risky for me to agree to. Am I right to feel that I could be financially on the hook if my friend's financial situation goes south due to unforseen circumstances. She is not on particularly sound financial footing, as far as I know.
