I am a teacher’s aid in Illinois, and full-time contract employee with the district.
They require me to do bus duty, which is additional time outside of my contracted 6.5 hours. However, after receiving my first paycheck, I realized I’m not being paid for it.
Other employees acknowledge teachers receive a stipend for bus duty, but aides do not and “that’s just how it is.”
Except, by not being paid, I’m working for free, right? And, as far as I’m aware, that breaks the law—or, I think it does. Hence, why I’m here.
So, could you please shed some light on this? Because I’m feeling underpaid and overused, and would really appreciate some clarity.
Thank you!
