Travelling on an expired but I have OPT and a job

Hi all.

I’m in America on an F-1 visa and originally from South Africa. I recently graduated and am currently doing my OPT so I am legally allowed to work in the country and do have a job.

I will be travelling out of the countryin December, but my F-1 Visa is expired (by that time it has been expired for about 4 months) I remember my school telling me that I am able to leave on an expired F-1 Visa, I just need to present immigration with my SSN card and a letter of employment. Is this true? And if not, is there anyway for me to travel?
