How to remove someone from a lease

I have a roommate who’s name is on the lease with me. My roommate and I got into a verbal argument and he then turned it physical by throwing a can of food at me and then slamming me to the ground. I am looking to have him removed from the lease to replace him with a roommate who is more respectful. What can be done to have his name removed from the lease and evicted? I have already filed a police report for assault.

Update: the landlord is being stubborn and says as long as he’s paying the rent he can’t do anything because his name is on there.
