I'm in the US. I'm just trying to get ahead of a problem. I'm in a band and we've covered songs in the past to throw in with our originals live, but recently we covered a song and absolutely made it out own. We changed the tempo, the lyrics, the way that the chorus and the verse is played. When you hear it, you know it's that song, but it's not that song. I always thought that as long as it was something that we made ours and we weren't using any samples, then it would fall under fair use, but recently people have been making me question that.. Thoughts? Any precautions that we should take? I'd really like to record this song and release it eventually, but it might be too big of a hassle. Also, just to add, we don't make any money off of our recorded music. Not a penny. All of our income is from live shows and merch. We don't sell CDs or anything. Thanks!
