My fiance (let's say George) and I bought a 2014 used vehicle less than a year ago. One of George's newish friends made a deal to install various items in the vehicle such as a backup camera, new speaker system and a few various small things. He was to have the vehicle in his custody over past of the summer this year while we continued to drive our nearly dead VW. The deal was that he was only ever to drive the vehicle should there be some kind of emergency situation in which case he needed to call us and confirm that it was OK. The vehicle had full coverage, and everything was up to date and registered in my fiancés name. As of a couple weeks ago we get a letter from the DMV stating that the vehicle was at the impound lot and accruing charges plus the tow charge. So that's $37 a day, and towing was about $120. To make matters worse, he was arrested for an OWI. This gut who was supposed to be installing upgrades in the vehicle apparently was pulled over in a parking lot and arrested for intoxication. One we received the mail, we visited the police department about the matter. I was under the assumption we should be filling a stolen vehicle report which would get the vehicle released from impound without cost. Not the case as I'm starting to understand. The officer advised us to post bond ($500), and then they would notify the court of the protest of which we would attend court explaining the tow was not legal. What do we do? Should we file a stolen vehicle report? What are our options? As a side note, this asshole claimed suicidal ideation and was healed off to rehab for a6 month stink. He's been gone for about a month now. HELP, WHAT IS THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION????
