Can schools legally search a student for a phone just because they implemented a new rule that students must hand over their phones before going to the bathroom?

I know I might just sound like a kid that's upset they can't go to the bathroom to kill time and use my phone but I'm really not and I'm just worried that if I leave my phone at home that I might get in trouble for "lieing" to a teacher about not having my phone or even get searched for it because my school is known for taking drastic measures for very small unimportant issues and we already have had many of the only good teachers fired because they don't follow those rules like sending a kid in ISS because they forgot to raise their hand to ask a question or they forgot to ask to get up and blow their nose, my school system really worries me and I just want something to help set my mind at ease because googling this didn't help at all.
