Tw: threats to a minor (by a minor, not op)

Location: US, SD (and ND)

My niece is being severely bullied at her high school. Her age range is 11-13, and her phone number has been repeatedly given out by her bullies to Creepy adult men, solicitors, other teenage girls, etc. She’s going through more vicious types of bullying too, but that’s the gist of what’s relevant, I think.

Less than a week ago, she got a threatening text on her phone despite changing her phone number. This number specified she was texting on behalf of the lead bully at her school, and threatened her. It was particularly worrisome because it was a ND number. My niece is located in SD.

I’m an over protective person. I’m 23 years old, and even though my sister had given the phone number and situation to police for a restraining order against the main bully, I was blinded by a need for revenge.

I put her phone number into a website (i paid 1 dollar for a 7 day trial) and found the name of who owned the phone. I then looked into everything about her, finding out that she is a minor (15 ) and who her parents are her school. I’m seriously itching to tell her parents and the school board about this behavior.

I waited until today to hear back from my sister that the person I found WAS the one behind the texting (The internet is a scary place). My sister said the police told her that she can’t get involved now.

I feel like since I found out who she was before the police did, I should be safe in sending off the information anonymously I don’t want my family in trouble though, and I certainly don’t know the law well enough to act without asking first.

The text messages sent to my niece were racist 80% of the time, and i did my research on the district’s school policy. Their anti-bullying policy was broken by these text messages, so its not like I’m doing this out of no where.

What are my options? I don’t want this girl to face zero consequences, but I don’t want to break the law here. What can I do to protect my niece from this happening again?

Extra info: My sister and I live on the reservation, but I think both the tribal police and state police were notified of this protection order.
