I 21(M) began using an app called "Acorns" about a month ago. For context, I have actively been using this account for almost a month now. I saw an ad and it explained how the checking and savings accounts offered really high APY% so it peaked my interest. I have since transferred a few thousand into the account and have been using it for transactions like a normal debit account as advertised it rounds up your purchases to the nearest dollar and invests the change. So far its really neat and I was starting to see some actual results from this method of saving. Until...
I wake up the day before yesterday and go to Wendy's to get a breakfast baconator and as I tap the card, BOOM. Declined. Try again. Declined. Open the app and see that my account is LOCKED/DISABLED. Boy was I LIVID. So as you would expect I begin calling the company, texting the chat support, and sending numerous emails frantically. Lets skip ahead to when I am ACTUALLY able to get ahold of someone... they inform me that the address on my account "Is not a valid residential address and that they will be holding the account until a valid address is provided." I have lived at this address for TWO years. It 100% is a valid address and even sent them NUMEROUS documents with the address. I.E: Paystub, insurance, utility bill. Even after these attempts they are still sticking with the narrative that I don't live at that address and that it is not a valid address. I have not had access to MY MONEY for 3 freaking days. No matter how may times I call or email, the person from Acorns responds with "Sorry for the inconvenience this matter will be "escalated". You should hear back from a supervisor in 3-5 business days.
I guess my question ultimately is... Is it LEGAL for a financial institution to WITHOLD the access to your private funds without a crime being suspected or committed ? Is there anything I can do ? I need this money.
