I apologize in advance my grammar is terrible.
So long story short I was living at a residence, me and the landlord had a dispute over some personal matters I had left with my dog to go live in a different state for a bit while I figured out my living situation. I had paid him rent the day before for the month so I told him I’ll leave my stuff here till I come back and move everything since I paid for the month.(we had no lease and everything was cash )
Fast forward I come back 2 weeks later to move everything out , I had forgotten to grab my mail that was delivered in that time frame. So I call him and ask for my mail back he started saying I left trash and owed him keys that I actually returned to him he misplaced them I suppose. Now he is refusing to return the mail to me multiple packages and important documents I had changed my mailing address but some stuff still slipped thru. I made multiple attempts to recover the mail hes now saying he won’t give me the mail all together. On top of it he’s on social media actively bad mouthing me. I’ve reframed from contact to not escalate the situation every correspondence been thru mutual friends.
I contacted the postal inspector and still haven’t had a response for over a week I even called to check to see what the status was . Before I contact local police for theft would it be a good idea to have a friend of mine who is a attorney write me up a letter asking for the mail explaining the consequences for theft of mail and how we could resolve this before law enforcement get involved. So I can move on from this
