Car reported stolen when it was never stolen

Post Body

So basically a month ago I bought a car from a tow yard. It was left there so the tow yard did a lien sale. I got all the paperwork and registered it in my name. About two weeks ago I was involved in a car accident. Well I guess yesterday the insurance had called the original owner to ask about the accident and he said he doesn’t know where that car is and he wasn’t involved. Now I’m not sure if the insurance company told him to or if he came up with the idea himself but basically he called the police to report it stolen.

He should never had been able to report it stolen because he hasn’t been the registered owner for months, but somehow the police department was still able to put it through.

So now last night I get pulled over and it’s a full felony stop. Guns pointed at me, hands up, walk backwards slowly, the whole show. They tell me the car was reported stolen the day before. I’m confused because I’m the only registered owner and I never called them. So I show them the paperwork that shows that I am in fact the owner of the car and this is some type of misunderstanding. The recognized the fact I was the owner so they didn’t take me to jail (luckily) but they still took the car as recovered property. Obviously there was no use in fighting the cops on this so I just had to accept that they would take it.

Now this morning I call the police department to see what I have to do to get my car back. They tell me I don’t need to do anything, I’m the registered owner I just need to pick it up from the tow yard ??? I ended up having to pay $300 to get it out and I feel like it’s not right that I would have to pay anything at all, when it’s clear the two police stations involved did not do their jobs right. I’m just trying to figure out what I can do to get back my money. Any advice on how to move forward would be greatly appreciated.

This story sounds a little fishy. The police can do a check through your department of motor vehicles while they have you stopped and see that you are the registered owner.

A. Why would the police take a stolen vehicle report from someone that wasn’t the registered owner!

B. Why would the police tow the car if the registration did in fact match your name?

There must be more to this story.
