Post Body

Earlier this year I was pregnant, I caught the pregnancy early because I was bleeding when I was not supposed to be on my period and suspected there was something wrong, So I went to the ER after it persisted for 2 weeks.

My HCG levels were monitored for the following weeks and the doctor's noticed that my levels were rising abnormally and suspected an ectopic pregnancy. After some ultrasounds it was confirmed that I had an ectopic. I was devastated, I always wanted to be a mother.

I ended up seeing an OBGYN who said that the best course of action to take would be to take a sample of the uterus and perform a DNC. My boyfriend was with me in the hospital, so the rest of what i'm about to tell you he could confirm.

The doctor suggested that both of these procedures be performed the same day. He explained the procedures to me and advised me that it could be painful, I asked him if there was any way I could do it under anesthesia as I am very uncomfortable receiving any kind of gynecological procedure or exam due to some past trauma and having already had a painful transvaginal ultrasound that week was exceedingly traumatizing in and of itself. The whole situation was invasive, painful, and very emotional. I was crying as I explained this and am having trouble not crying as I recall this incident.

The doctor said that he thought it was a bad idea, and that we should try to do it that day. I again told him I didn't want to. He suggested local anesthesia via a shot in the cervix. I said I wasn't sure, and he told me that this was a very serious situation and that I shouldn't postpone any procedure that could be done now. I folded, and agreed to the local anesthesia.

I immediately started to panic after the speculum was inserted. I was instantly crying and shaking to the point of the table making noise. He began to give me the shot of local anesthesia and it was far too painful for me to handle. I told him I couldn't do it. The procedure was immediately ended. He then scheduled a DNC with full anesthesia for the next day.

My boyfriend has described seeing this happen as incredibly disturbing, and after the doctor left the room, he was shaking as well.

After the DNC I was transferred to a different OBGYN, and she immediately questioned why I was given a DNC in the first place As it was already confirmed through ultrasound that there was no pregnancy In the uterus. I ended up having a fallopian tube removed as that was where the pregnancy ended up being located.

When I told my boyfriend's mother about the incident in its entirety, she told me to look into taking legal action. Is this the situation where that is appropriate?
