[CO] Mom is asking me to write a letter to the state saying I send her money as part of her process of acquiring low-income assistance?

Post Body

Hi all. Not sure if this is the right place. My mom is 55 and disabled (not currently on disability but in the process of getting it) and has been living for the past two years or so off an inheritance from her father. The inheritance has recently run out and she has been relying on me to help her out while she gets signed up for food stamps and other assistance. Recently she sent me a message asking me to send a letter to the State as part of this process, explaining that she had been living off that inheritance but now I send her money monthly for expenses.

She's not great at communicating and isn't really explaining why she needs this or what it'll mean. I presume it's to explain how she's getting by now in lieu of income verification (as she has no income save what I send her), and that's fine, but I'm hesitant for a couple of reasons:

1.) Are they going to see that someone is taking care of her and deny her based on that?

2.) Are they going to calculate her assistance based on what I'm sending her now with the assumption that it will continue?

I can't keep doing this forever, or even for more than maybe a couple months. I don't make a lot of money and have my own expenses, plus a couple of high cost surprises (emergency dental work, vet bills) that, combined with helping my mom out, have rapidly drained my savings and put me in a bad position. Even without the big hits I've taken recently, this is far from sustainable.

By sending this, am I going to be shooting myself in the foot and committing to paying for her forever, or is it a normal part of this process? Can I communicate to them that this is temporary help?

We live in Colorado.

Any insight would be very appreciated.
