Is it legal for cops to drop by and solicit charges on a person after you have posted video surveillance footage of a suspect on Facebook to warn or embarrass them into not coming back around? A day after my post a detective stopped by my house and asked if I would press charges on him. I couldn't because I told the guy if he brought everything back I wouldn't involve the law. He brought almost everything back, I've recently discovered that he didn't bring a couple of DeWalt batteries back that I didn't realize were missing till now. My question is do normal detectives try to persuade people to press charges if they are not called or is it just the bored small town crooks I mean cops that do this?
