Hello,
Currently a college student at the university of Minnesota. I recently received a notice for damages after I moved out of my apartment. I attempted to dispute them however I was told my request was denied. I asked for a receipt of the repairs done as they claimed a stain and that carpet needed to be replaced for about $600 however I was never given a damage report or allowed to see the unit before I moved in (university housing). I asked for a receipt or images or any proof this damage was done before I moved in and was told no essentially, and that they come up with the prices on their own. I was supposedly given a chance to do a damage report in my email after move in however I wasn’t told about this, and the unit had issues outside of that room that needed immediate attention so I focused on that. What are my rights here? What can I do? Do I have a case that I could bring to an attorney? The total amount of about 1,000 I just cannot afford at the moment.
TLDR: student housing asking for 1,000 in damages and 600 for a stain that I have no idea if it is there or not or if I caused it. Do I have any recourse?
