This involves my mom who is based in Arkansas.
My mom's lease agreement says that the tenant must give at least 60 days notice before moving and the apartment keys need to be returned by the last day if their current lease (June 4th).
My mom gave written notice 90 days before the end of her lease. The notice was placed in the hands of the property manager. She officially vacated/cleaned the apartment around the middle of May. Then turned her keys, etc in on May 31st. At that time, she was told they would contact her to schedule a walk-through.
Today she called to follow-up and management said she now owes rent for June and July because she turned her keys in 5 days early AND moved out before June 4th. They expected her to move out the day her lease ended! Apparantly, the manager has done this to most of the tenants! The office is always closed with no set hours, they don't return calls, and the company is based out-of-state. Is this even normal? My mom is retired, what can she do?
