Can you settle a bet between my wife and I about birth and last names?
Post Body

My wife were just talking about last names for babies and the how the last name is traditionally the fathers. However, she says legally it is the fathers last name, regardless of the father is in the picture or not. I cannot believe that last names are legally required in that sense, the child just needs a last name whether it be the father’s, mother’s, or a hyphenated form.

So is there any legal requirement in the US with what last name the child receives at birth?
