How to talk about working with people who have intellectual/developmental disabilities in a non-offensive manner?
Post Body

For background, I'm starting my next round of college classes here soon, and I'm doing a couple Spanish classes for my minor. A pretty common thing that's come up in all my previous classes is talking about what you did over the summer/where you work. I work as a Direct Support Professional both in a group home and in supported living environments for folks who have intellectual/developmental disabilities. My job ranges from helping cook, clean, assist with meds, driving clients around town, etc.

I'm wanting to know how to talk about my job and the people I work with in the least offensive manner. What are the terms I should use to refer to the people with these disabilities? How do I say or describe my job title (Direct Support Professional) in Spanish? And are there any other terms/phrases I might find helpful when talking about working in this kind of field?
