Exceptions to gender rules

I am slowly learning Spanish. I was asking my coworker about something and he mentioned that "la radio" is an exception to the masculine/feminine phrasing.Typically, if it ends in "a" it is feminine.Or if you are saying "a towel - un toalla" but if its plural, then it's "la toalles." Can you think of any other exceptions similar to radio?
