Learning Android Development (my perspective)
Post Body

Hello everyone!

Before reading this post, pls know that I have been subscriber for a few months & have read the FAQ as well as sidebar. I have been feeling lost for a while & was feeling I might lose motivation. Thus this post.

ABOUT MYSELF: I have been working online & developing websites since Frontpage came out. Since then I have worked on a lot of projects. I know programming (php/mysql, a bit of asp) and developed a few applications back in the days when cobalt raqs were used as servers. In 2008, I took time off as full time programmer & entered my family business. Since then I have been actively developing websites and have excellent command over SEO, CRO, Marketing, landing pages and PPC.

I have enrolled in a Java course since end of May in a local institute & been watching Jonathan Shewchuk (UC Berkeley) videos on YouTube because I feel the course I am taking at the institute is going at a slower pace than what I like. It's a 3 months course. The while idea is to enter Android app dev development and take it as a full time profession. I have to make my exit from the family business (due to personal reasons) by December holidays. I am married with 2 kids (twin daughters) and want to be able to confidently support my family with my earnings being an android app developer.

I can manage 15-20 hours a week for my learning. I have found that I am a bit weak on Arrays and OOP concepts and have been trying to put in efforts and time to make it my strength.

I have the following questions in regards to my learning and my end target:

  • Which other online resources should I start simultaneously to speed up my learning (I plan to start MOOC Java) once I finish with the UC Berkeley course.

  • Is my timeline realistic?

  • What resources would you recommend for learning XML?

  • At what stage would you recommend that I start working on Android app (I have an idea in mind for a B2B app/news aggregator/price list) simultaneously so that my Java concepts become even more clear.

I cannot be thankful enough to have found reddit and this sub. I have been a lot motivated after having joined this sub and this was sub was amongst the top reason for me to enroll in the course at the local institute after delaying this decision for over a year.

All advise will be read and appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
