Why is there so much contempt for boot camps?

Post Body

I've been getting more and more into programming and have been bugging a few of my colleagues in tech department how they got started, and many have said they joined a boot camp and after a year or so of building projects and learning they were able to land a job. After researching boot camps I've noticed many on here say they suck and don't really get you anywhere. What's the deal? Has anyone had a good/bad experience with one?

I've considered doing them because they're much cheaper than attending college, as that's a pretty important factor right now
