The question we asked each other was,

What intrinsic factors contribute to the solution of this problem? Why can this problem be solved two different ways? Is this answer 10 or 16? Why?

The follow up we asked each other was,

Why is there a "rule" we must follow to solve correctly, if the expression, written in its given format, works already?
