Help on user interface design for desktop app?

Hi my knowledge in java is fairly basic and in the books iv read it teaches me mainly java swing. But I cannot be for the life of me use the layout managers efficiently. It's just so damn hard. Is therr any other way to make a desktop app without using swing? Or is there some more convenient way to layout buttons, text fields, etc. On the screen?
