Post Body

Hi guys. I was born and raised in the US and come from a Dutch-Indo family, so I've grown up hearing Dutch pretty much all my life. But I've recently started to learn it properly, and I've noticed that the Indo (Indisch) Dutch I grew up with is not like modern Dutch at all lol.

So I thought I'd share a list of words/phrases that I know to be uniquely Indo, and I'd like you guys to tell me if you recognize any of them:

  1. Aanstiel (this means a girl who likes to show off)
  2. Baaien (or "baden" with a silent D, it means to bathe or shower)
  3. Indos say "ik moet naar achter gaan" if they have to use the bathoom
  4. Piekeren (to think about something)
  5. Indos will repeat a noun twice if they want to make it plural (for example koffer-koffer instead of koffers 😂)
  6. They'll generally say "hollands" instead of "nederlands" (and same for Holland vs Nederland)
  7. Indos say "muisjes" to refer to hagelslag (although we say hagelslag as well)
  8. And more!

I excluded phrases that include maleis (indonesisch) to just focus on the Dutch-based ones. Feel free to add more if you're a fellow Indo :)
