Shadows to create form

Hi there! I'm trying to teach myself to draw, and practice and refinement alone have actually gotten me farther than I would have liked. However, I'm stuck when it comes to shadows and shading. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how I can figure out what a shadow needs to look like in order to create a shape or idea that I have in my head.
TL;DR: How does one shade from memory/imagination?
