Need help/advice to stop the bleeding.

I made this with some dual tipped markers/permanent markers on one of those craft store pine boxes. I want to seal it and make it shine because there is color transfer, but any liquid causes both types of markers to bleed significantly. What options do I have for this piece, and what can I use on future pieces that achieve a vibrancy on wood without completely masking the grain?
