A cabin by the lake
Post Body

I own an off the grid cabin by the lake. We have owned the cabin in the family for a few decades, it is in nature with a few other cabins nearby.

There is no power, so there are no electricity costs at all. There are small rivers connecting the lake, that are safe to drink water from. You can bathe free in the water.

There are lots of trees around to cut down to heat the cabin. It is pretty small so it does not need a ton. Large windows heat the cabin in the summer, so it stays heated long after the sun is down.

There are fish in the lake to get protein. I could grow potatos and perhaps get a greenhouse to get down food costs.

If I installed a couple of solar panels I could easily live there full time with extremely low yearly costs. I live in a country where health care is free. I can bike to the nearest store to buy food, which is about 1.5 hours away, so I would need no car.

Monthly costs would be some insurance on the cabin, and a decent data plan for my phone.

To visit friends and family I would need to bike for 8 hours, which is achievable. I could spend time with them for 2-3 days at a time.

It would be interesting to experiment in living this kind of slow lifestyle. Much of the reason why we work so much is to buy time-saving devices like cars, fast food, quick heating etc. Since we work 40 hrs (add commute and preperations to that), we always feel we need to get the absolute most out of our precious spare time which often involves money.

With a slower lifestyle, the potential to save money is massive, while also gaining so much more free time.

Personally I still work and grind to get to fire one day.

Potentially, if I wanted, I have enough money right now to leanfire and live in a cabin by the lake. With 4% returns, I would be able to live off $10k a year, way more than I need to live in a cabin.

Interesting thought.
