Ranked Flex rank disparity

just finished a ranked flex game where we got pretty handily beaten, first game into my gold promos
my teams tier average, silver 3, the enemies? plat fucking 4, why in the world, is riot matchmaking me with a team 2 whole tier divisions above my team?
for some clarity, it was around 11:30pm on OCE, definitely not peak time, but surely it should be able to match me better than that?
