In-Depth Analysis On New Vision vs Old Vision

So as I was playing with my friends yesterday on the new patch we came to the agreement that the new warding system is not rewarding in the slightest and my mid laner said "I feel like I am playing blind". I agreed with him wholeheartedly but any randoms we happened to be queued with always tried to tell me that it was better, your yellow trinket gets two charges, pinks are cheaper, etc. So I decided to do a little more digging comparing the numbers to back up my belief that the new warding needs massive buffs.

 

First the old warding

  • The Green Ward - This was 75 gold, could be purchased at any time and lasted 3 minutes.
  • The Pink Ward - Cost was 100 gold
  • Yellow Trinket - places a stealth ward lasting 60/120 seconds on a 180 second cooldown (holds one charge).
  • Red Trinket - Drone lasting 6 seconds with 400/600 range on a 120/75 second cooldown
  • Greater Stealth Totem - places a stealth ward that lasts 180 seconds and store a charge every 60 seconds up to 2 charges.
  • Greater Vision Totem - Places a pink ward (120 second cooldown)
  • Oracle's Lens - Summon's a drone that reveals wards and traps in a 600 unit radius on a 75 second cooldown, champion gains true sight for 10 seconds.

 

The New Warding

  • The Green Ward - Removed
  • Pink Ward - Cost reduced to 75
  • Yellow Trinket - Can now store up to 2 charges (starts with 1) has a 60-120 second duration (level 1-18) and generates a new charge every 180-120 seconds (level 1-18)
  • Red Trinket - Drone lasting 6 seconds with 450-575 range (level 1-18) on a 90-60 second cooldown (level 1-18) with a new passive that gives warning particles over units it finds you can't see with 500-2000 range (level 1-18)
  • Greater Stealth Totem - Removed
  • Greater Vision Totem - Removed
  • Oracle Lens Upgrade - No longer grants true sight has same passive as the red trinket with warning particles and the size of the drone is increased by 50%.

 

Now that I have shown the different aspects of warding (I did not include sightstone because the warding mechanics remain largely unchanged just the item build path has changed), I want to point out what exactly is so bad and makes warding such a bad experience at the moment.

 

Analysis on each part of warding

  • The green ward being removed I only view as a true negative because of the other changes that I will discuss further below (mainly the yellow trinket changes). This is because it was a 75 gold ward that lasted 3 minutes that is now expected to be replaced by the yellow trinket, but the yellow trinket fails at this job miserably.
  • The pink ward changes I approve of because they are very important to high level vision gameplay and with the removal of green wards they are even more necessary.
  • The yellow trinket is my largest complaint about the new warding system and is the source of most of my frustration. The non-upgraded yellow trinket is undeniably better than the previous one but that was made up for by being able to purchase green wards before that lasted 3 minutes, keep in mind the max a yellow trinket ward can list is two minutes and that is at level 18. The cooldown for charges of the new yellow trinket is greater at every point in the game until level 18, which combined with the removal of green wards, makes vision suffer significantly especially early game. I can no longer take care of warding my own lane anymore because I will have at best my trinket ward placed and a pink.
  • The greater stealth totem upgrade being gone is another major issue because of all the other factors at play. This is the equivalent of the new starting trinket in the sense that it can store two charges but other than that the new trinket is worse in every way imaginable. First, the ward duration is at best 2 minutes at level 18 while these wards had a 3 minute duration like the green ward. Second, this trinket had a recharge rate of 60 seconds while the new trinket gets a 120 second recharge at level 18. This new trinket compared to the old yellow upgrade combined with the lack of green wards makes the new vision capabilities significantly worse at level 9 (for those of us that upgraded our trinkets).
  • The greater vision totem upgrade being removed isn't bad at first but when combined with a few other features removed you start to realize how bad they are combined together. While the pink ward does cost less, once you run out of slots in your inventory you can no longer place any pink wards down late game. This was still a problem before, however, the true sight on the upgraded red trinket took care of issues like evelynn, shaco, etc. Now with the true sight removed the best way to fight this by far are pink wards, but when late game hits and you no longer have space, the ability to counterplay these champions is all but eliminated except by maybe the support still having room for pinks.
  • The red trinket is fine for the most part although it has smaller range when leveling up compared to before and greater starting range. The lack of true sight on oracle's is the real killer at the moment and with no other options to gain the true sight for the situations when it is needed it leaves a hole that is lacked.

 

If you read all my points above than it should be apparent that overall there is less options for vision in the game that significantly harms mid and top especially, this is because junglers have the new smite enchant for ward options and supports are still getting sightstone. However, forcing junglers into that smite enchant significantly harms the ability to choose what enchantment to go with, which I thought was the whole theme of this season, right now it feels like if I choose any enchantment besides the tracker's knife than my vision is at a significant disadvantage, basically meaning I don't have much choice. Some of you might say that "but the old trinket upgrades cost money!" while this is true I would happily pay the 250 gold for the trinket upgrade and with the alternatives removed (such as green wards) I have no choice I am just forced into inferior warding to gain 250 gold.

 

TL;DR The new warding system is vastly inferior and has a lot less vision across the board throughout the game. Mid and Top are harmed most and I feel like I am playing "blind" much more often than before.
