Returning player looking for some guidance
Post Body

Hi /r/leagueoflegends,

My summoner name is Fulhelm, and I currently play in the OCE server. I stopped playing about 3 years ago, due to some unknown reason my net quality deteriorated, and I wasn't able to play League on anything lower than 1.8k ping. This, despite me living in Australia, and playing on the OCE server (imagine you live in California and get constant 1.8k ping playing on the NA server). I used to main support, and the highest I was able to get is only about 1498 ELO during Season 2.

It was probably down to me using wireless Internet though, prior to that, I was able to play on wireless without any ping issues. Either way, a month or two ago a colleague introduced me to this wonderful device called an Ethernet-over-Power adapter. Coupled with the fact that a new group of friends have asked me to play League with them, so here I am on this sub looking for some guidance.

First off, the game seems REALLY different to me now. Back when I stopped playing (around the time Jayce was launched maybe? I tried transferring to OCE when I heard about it, but still had my ping issues, so I stopped playing - this would be around the Kha'Zix release period if I recall), there were no such things as trinkets. Boot enhancements were just introduced around that time, so I never actually really used them. Right now...I just don't know where to begin.

My new group of friends want me to main mid lane, which happens to be my worst role up until the point I stopped playing. What are some good mid lane heroes to learn now? The only mid heroes I used to be able to play are Annie, and Vlad, which I assume would be pretty outdated at this point (with Vlad probably being better for top lane than mid). I've been suggested Ryze as one possible option, but I also want to see what others I can consider learning.

I also have this issue where my friends have only just started playing League quite recently (they are fresh 30's, one guy is 26). I don't know if it's because of my normal wins (I have about 780 normal wins on my account), or if it's because there's a possibly smaller pool of players in the OCE server, but my friends can't seem to keep up with their opponents. Since I started playing with them, we have not won a single normal game as a group - the last game we apparently had a Diamond level ADC as our opponent, who crushed my team's bottom laners. I am not sure how I can help them improve, and don't know if I can, seeing as I am really rusty and behind in the game's meta knowledge. They have also told me that they feel that the level of the opponents shot up since I started playing with them. They have told me they want to eventually move onto ranked teams, and as casual as we all are (we're all working adults right now), I'd also like to help them get there.

While I have been asked to focus on mid, however I also don't want to give up other roles. What are some champions I should also learn for each role? I used to play these champs:

  • Top - Nasus, Renekton, Warwick, Shen
  • Mid - Annie, Vlad
  • Jungle - Warwick
  • ADC - Caitlyn
  • Support - Sona, Taric, Janna, Soraka

In regards to jungling, I know jungling patterns and paths have slightly changed since the last few years. Back when I jungled, it used to be the Blue start to Golems for Level 4, then gank or farm jungle again. It seems I get much less EXP just staying in the jungle now, and Smite's cooldown seems a lot lower too. Maybe I should look up beginner jungling videos on YouTube?

In terms of hero guides, I used to frequent solomid.net - is it still the go-to place for champion guides?

Lastly, what other advice can you impart to me?

I realize this is a lot to ask, so I'd like to thank anyone for really helping me out here. If any OCE-based players would like to add me, and wouldn't mind a really rusty player who can't play a lot of the newer champions to join them, please feel free to add me in game too! Please also feel free to request more information, if you feel that anything I have listed out is insufficient.
