How does bidding for @names work?

What is the @name? Is that the channel name?
So I noticed a bidding war for @movies (a bunch of accounts seem to have had it) and was just wondering how that works?
The questions I have. When I buy my @brand, can some whale just bid more for it and take it from me? If so who does the money go to that is paid for the @name?
