Questions on dethatching and fertilizing

Post Body

My lawn is decent. Have had a local company taking care of fertilization for the last four or five years, but am trying to save money and do that myself. I’ve also been mowing myself and alternate between mulching vs bagging. There aren’t many weeds which is excellent. However, there seems to be a thin but hardy layer of thatch and I’m not sure what to do about it.

The first pic above shows a small section of lawn that I used a dethatching rake on and what I got up. The second pic is of the dethatched grass. The last pic is of a regular patch. Should I pick up a dethatcher and go to town? Or should I be careful because of weeds getting sunlight?

Also, I’m in Zone 6B and am about to put down Jonathan Green’s weed/feed (Blue bag). Would it be better to dethatch then fertilize?

Thanks for the help - greatly appreciated.
