My friends and I were discussing recently the distinction between the stereotypical "restraining order" that you hear being filed in family law cases (abusive exes, for example). Is there a better term for this than just the blanket "restraining order" that you file for in any civil case?
My understanding was that the restraining orders you get against exes, if violated, carry criminal punishments and this didn't mesh with my understanding of civil restraining orders.
Is this the right subreddit to ask this question? TIA
