How to get tar or pitch off of clothes

I was patching my roof and I got some of the black tar/sealant stuff on my pants (along with the tar that is naturally on the shingles anyway)
-Is it safe to wash those pants in the washer with my other clothes? Do I need to pre-treat them?
I don’t want to create a mess in the washer that will get tar on my clothes or everyone else’s for that matter
Side note: this happened a week or so ago. I just threw them off to the side and forgot about them until now.
