Seeking a Latin Tutor

Post Body

If this category is incorrect, please tell me and I will change it. Please read all of the following before replying. Thank you.

I am seeking a personal teacher or tutor for Latin. If you cannot be my tutor but still wish to help, I would accept that as well.

Requirements

  1. You must be familiar with, or willing to learn and to use, the old style of teaching. That is, rote memory, recitation, construing, and writing versus.

  2. You must be willing to work with the Eton Latin Grammar and other texts as used prior to 1868. You can find the full syllabus, complete with free books, here. This is very intensive and is not meant to be learned within a few months or a year. Please note that I am using the Traditional English Pronunciation, which is neither Classical nor Ecclesiastical. If you speak RP, particularly Upper, it will be extremely useful.

  1. Please be aware that I am totally blind. I cannot use images, graphical charts, tables, IPA, etc. and I must convert all pdfs to usable txt or rtf files. Unfortunately, since these books are old and photo-scanned, the conversions often lead to considerable ocr errors, making it difficult to read the texts. Therefore, I may need you to edit them for me. This might be as simple as correcting a few words or as involved as typing the current section, or recording yourself reading it. Both work for me.

  2. I will need you to administer examinations, help me with pronunciation, and eventually, evaluate oral recitations and written exercises in construing. All already exist, so you don't need to create them. Currently, I am in the First Form, so I will be writing and reciting noun declensions and verb conjugations. Once i have learned those, I will progress to translating, parsing, and simple versification, then to memorising and reciting lines, then to reciting declamations and speeches.

  3. While it would be great if you would provide these services for free, I do realise that this is quite unrealistic. Please be aware that I can only pay $25 per hour at the most, via Paypal. In that case, I can only work with you for about four hours per month, due to financial constraints. I may be able to do more, but not as a normal practice.

  4. We can work via audio calls on Messenger or audio on Zoom. I do not use video.

  5. As said earlier, if you cannot be a full-time teacher or tutor, but if you are still willing to offer advice, recommendations, occasional editing, and so on, particularly if you are familiar with the teaching of Latin in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and/or the Traditional English pronunciation, please respond. I would love to hear from you.
