English Pronunciation, using Upper RP. Please do not use IPA in answer, as it's inaccessible with screen readers. Opus is said o-pus. But what about opera? Is it o-pe-ra or op-er-a? I would assume the latter, since that is how it's said in English, but that seems to break the rule of the first vowel being long if there is a consonant and vowel after it. "Juvenile" is ju-ve-nile. But what about sedile? I know that sedili is sedi-lie. Some words, such as "bove", are pronounced without the final e, like the English "clove", or indeed, the Latin "Jove", though it could also be said bo-vee. Which should I use? Animalia" is ani-may-leea). What, then, about "animale)? Would it be ani-mayl or ani-may-lee? Why is the first a short? Maria is mar-ee-a, like the English Maria, and "mari" is mar-ie. But Is it better to say "mare" as mar-ee like the English "mary" or mare, like the English mare (horse)? Similarly with lapade. "Lapidi" is said lapi-die. But would it be la-pa-dee (or -ay) or would the final e be silent?
I apologise for all of these questions. I just want to ensure that I am saying these correctly. Any other advice would be appreciated. Oh, and let us settle this. Other than saying the v as v, how would I say "veni, vidi, vici"? Would it be ven-ie, vid-ie, vis-ie?
