When to upgrade melee?

Hi ya'll! I've only got 4 hours gameplay as of yet and I was just wondering, when is the best time to upgrade a melee weapon? Let's say I've got an axe with 4/4 slots. Should I upgrade it asap or wait untill I've got 1/4 bars left to get most out of it? I'm unsure how it works.

I usually upgrade as soon as I can. So upgraded melee is usually a one shot kill. But in all honesty it depends on your game play. Sometimes I found upgrading pointless because I could use that on crafting a bomb or something which is more useful. Plus you’ll always find a melee weapon to replace one that going out.
